Comparison Pages and AI Answers: What Gear Editors Can Control

For gear editors: what a splitboard comparison can and cannot change in AI answers, and the checklist to make specs comparable and verifiable.

If you edit splitboard reviews and comparison pages, one question matters before you open a new draft: what can comparison content actually change in AI answers? Comparison pages do not have their own AEO ranking factor; a clear table only makes a statement easier to extract and reuse.

Short answer: controllable versus uncontrollable

Google states there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond ordinary SEO fundamentals. Even when a page meets all requirements, Google may still not crawl, index, or serve it. That is the boundary for this whole topic.

You control whether one line can be lifted and still be true. You do not control whether an answer engine cites it, which answer it builds, or how long that citation lasts. The useful work is to make the controllable part verifiable, then prepare the official facts a reader can check next.

What you can control

  • Same dimension on each row: compare flex with flex, weight with weight, not a peak rating with a long-term average.
  • Same unit in each row: metric first, converted value in brackets, one unit per row.
  • Same condition next to the number: test basis, rider weight range, snow condition, or manufacturer schedule.
  • Explicit verdict with conditions: state which rider or use case each option suits, and when neither suits.
  • Substitutable scope: only compare boards a buyer could realistically choose between.

Same units and cited sources: a teaching checklist

The table below is a hypothetical teaching example, not a real board test. It shows shape only.

DimensionOption AOption BCondition
Weight per board2.8 kg3.1 kg (6.8 lb)Size 158, manufacturer specification
Minimum riding days logged32 days28 daysEditorial ride log, same season

Before publishing, check: can a reader lift one row and still be correct? Is every number traceable to a dated source or labelled as a teaching example? Does the verdict name a condition instead of declaring one universal winner?

What to prepare on your official pages

A comparison is easier to reuse when the facts behind it exist somewhere checkable. Prepare model names, sizes, specifications with units and test conditions, availability, and contact or enquiry entry. Keep conflicting versions consistent so an AI system and a buyer do not find two different answers.

FAQ

Will a cleaner table guarantee an AI citation?

No. A clean table is easier to use; being used is not yours to command. Selection depends on query, language, market, model, and Google's own serving decision.

What should editors avoid?

Do not compare different scopes, publish numbers without conditions, write the page only to make one option win, or put confidential data in a public table. A comparison that only advertises reads as advertising, not reference.
